RECREATION and EVENTS
Plenty of events fill the town’s calendar for Lauderdale-by-the-Sea residents. In February, the town participates in year-round events that include Taste of the Beach, the Flower and Tea Show, Easter-By-The-Sea, 4th of July Parade and fireworks, Oktoberfest, October Fish Fry, an Arts and Crafts Show, and Christmas-by-the-Sea, to name a few. Celebrated as the "Shore Dive Capitol of South Florida," the reefs are accessible within a short swim and a pair of fins. Additionally, residents can choose from leisurely beach combing, deep sea fishing, or snorkeling and scuba diving. Residents partake in tennis, gambling at the several Native American casinos, air boat rides on the Everglades, or the shopping, restaurants and theatre in nearby Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.
EDUCATION
There are no public schools in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea; however, children attend Broward County Public Schools in the nation’s largest fully-accredited school district. Most students attend Bayview Elementary, Sunrise Middle School and Ft. Lauderdale High School. Area centers for higher education include The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, City College of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Atlantic University and Broward College.
ECONOMY
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea's major industries are tourism, finance, insurance, real estate and hospitality. The town is several miles north of Port Everglades, presenting the nation’s second busiest cruise hub and providing an economic booster to the area. Local industry is also heavily reliant on tourism, retail trade and boating manufacturing/maintenance.
